The Stone Eagle Special Selection for 2017 is an absolute triumph, in the true spirit of the philosophy behind the special selection. Special Selection is the epitome of red wine making at Two Sisters and the most exceptional small lot wine produced only in the best of vintages. 2017 was one of those years, as the weather was absolutely ideal. The grape varieties were aged individually for a full 3 years in barrel, then carefully blended to reflect the vintage. The final wine is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. The barrels for the Cabernets were all French oak, with the Merlot seeing about 30% American and 70% French oak. The resulting wine is extraordinary, as the synergy of viticulture and viniculture results in a wine of amazing structure, balance and character. In the glass the wine is deeply coloured, dark and almost inky. The nose is intense and engaging. Aromas of dark fruits abound, with undertones of sweet spices, pipe tobacco, licorice, eucalyptus and chocolate. The palate is bold, rich, and layered as the flavours interplay with balancing tannins, alcohol and acidity. Blackberries, black cherries and black currants contrast the earthy notes and layers of sweet and savory spices. Nuances continue to emerge with time on the palate, as the complexities of the wine reveal themselves. The wine transitions seamlessly into an unrelenting finish that becomes a lasting conclusion to the memorable tasting experience.
